Sometimes beautiful things are born in desperate places

Counselling
The model of counselling I offer is primarily person centred. I am a BACP registered and accredited counsellor.
Person Centred Counselling, pioneered by Carl Rogers, is a humanistic counselling model supposing that it is the quality of the therapeutic relationship between the counsellor and the client which facilitates healing.
The Person Centred model of counselling has at its core the theory of "the actualising tendency" which says that everything in the universe including a human being is striving to reach its potential. Sometimes obstacles may hinder this tendency for a while. This is a very positive view, supposing that people possess a basic goodness and that given the right conditions by a counsellor, will strive to take charge of their lives, overcome their obstacles, and begin to grow again towards self actualisation.
Person Centred Counselling has three essential counsellor attitudes in its practice:
1. Unconditional Positive Regard
This means that the counsellor accepts and prizes each client as they are. This does not mean condoning destructive behaviour, it means that the counsellor is able to separate individuals from their actions.
2. Empathy
The counsellor is able to enter into a client's world as well as communicating to that client that their experience has been understood.
3. Congruence
The counsellor is genuine in the counselling relationship.
Creating such conditions is about a counsellors presence as a human being rather than about specific techniques. Thus the counsellor is able to facilitate clients in tapping into their own inner resources so that they begin to value themselves as they are, instead of who they think they should be.
A man is like a bit of labrador spar, which has no lustre as you turn it in your hand, until you come to a particular angle, then it shows deep and beautiful colours.

How long does a counselling session last and how often are they?
My counselling sessions last 50 minutes each and are usually structured on a weekly basis. The number of counselling sessions needed is individual and varies from person to person.
We begin with an initial session, which enables you to know whether or not you are happy to work with me. This also allows me to begin to get to know you and whether the counselling I can offer is compatible with your needs. Occasionally, a client presents issues, which are too serious or unsuitable for counselling. In such cases, onward referral is then appropriate. Sometimes a client may be referred back to a G.P.
If, after discussion, we decide that we can work together, we can then agree on a number of sessions, in the short term.
At the end of these counselling sessions, our work may be complete or you may decide that you wish to continue over a longer period. In longer term work we will have a review at regular intervals.
